This pre-owned set is exquisitely painted. There is a sticker on the bottom indicating that these dolls were made in Russia and imported exclusively by Sovak.

I do not see an artist's name or town where they were made. There is a unique number on the bottom that may indicate the production number of this set. At any rate, this is one of the most beautifully painted nesting doll sets I have ever come across. Each of the five dolls is decorated in various outdoor themes.

The largest doll is a female bow hunter and her dog. Most of the dolls include pointy shaped objects in the landscape that appear to be teepees. They seem a bit out of place in the cold arctic terrain. Matryoshka dolls were made in the former Soviet Union for more than a hundred years, and they continue to be made in modern Russia today. It is one of their largest craft industries.

Many of the dolls still depict traditional Russian peasant girls, while others depict fairy tales and folk tales that have been passed down through Russian history. Each has a glossy lacquer finish.
