In 1947 the United States Mint formalized its unofficial program of sending collectors complete sets from the mint for their collections. The mint sent out Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco coins in a cardboard envelope (see photo) with 2 of each coin. The double mint sent was born! Collectors then promptly popped the coins out and threw away the cardboard.Only 49,656 were sent out in 1955, and very few remain. The double mint set series lasted through 1958. The cardboard had a low sulfur content, which has led to stunning toning in the coins, as you can see from the photograph. The coins are extremely high grade, with beautiful toning.
The S and D boards are blank for coins that were not minted in 1955. Serious collectors will jump at the opportunity to add this set to their collection.
The photos contain the actual set, plus the interior envelope. The exterior envelope is not available.
